New proposals for decent and warm homes – Decent Homes and Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards explained
Chapters in this video (27 mins)
In 2025, the UK government is asking for views on changes to the Decent Homes Standard (DHS) and Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES) for social and private rented homes.
These consultations, open until 10 September 2025, aim to improve the quality and energy efficiency of homes—especially focusing on things like condition and warmth. The proposed changes include stricter rules on building repairs, preventing damp and mould, and making homes more energy efficient by aiming for an EPC rating of C or better.
This session explained what the consultations are about and how you can share your views. Officials from the Decent Home Standard and Minimum Energy Efficiency Standard teams talked through the proposals and what they could mean for you as a resident.
Speakers:
- Haider Al-Qaddo – Policy Team leader Housing Quality, Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government
- Tom Davies - Team Leader, Social Housing Decarbonisation, Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government
The consultations close at 11:45pm on 10 September 2025. You can read more and share your views using the links on the right hand side.
